What can I say?

For my first book review of 2013, I'll start with something I completely love.

I picked Flat-out Love for at least 3 times in 2012, but didn't get passed Chapter 1 for some trivial yet funny reasons. First time I tried it was over the summer break last year. I read it on my cousin's gadget, but we parted ways so I wasn't able to finish at least Chapter 1. Boohoo. Second time was after reading Ascend by Amanda Hocking. I loved Switched and Torn, but the final installment was beyond frustrating. Ugh. Anyhow I needed to comfort my weeping heart so I picked this up only to find out that one major character in the book is named Finn! Apparently the other leading guy in Switched, Torn, and Ascend is named Finn as well. Obviously I wouldn't want anything, not even a name, to remind me of  the Trylle Trilogy. So I didn't read Flat-out Love for the next four months. I tried a third time, but for some reason  I couldn't remember I wasn't able to reach Chapter 2.

Come December 31st, I was browsing my TBR list for something quick and fun read. I wanted to finish something before the fireworks starts cracking so finally I picked up this book. AGAIN. Apparently it wasn't a quick read. WAIT! Don't get me wrong. It is a quick, light, and FUN Contemporary YA! :"] It's just that the characters are a little bit too nerdy in some way. Our guy, Matt Watkins, lives in a house of intellectuals. His mom and dad are both academes. His 12 year-old sister Celeste is also brilliant, but she has some socio-mental problems. She doesn't have friends; acts like a child; and keeps a flat cut-out board of his "adorable" travelling brother, Finn. So much for a normal family, aren't they?

Julie, with all her apartment mishaps, gets to live with the Watkins for a year. She temporarily stays at Finn's room since he's not around. Although Finn isn't around, Julie was able to befriend him through e-mail and Facebook chat. She babbles about her life. He sends her photos of his volunteer work abroad. Eventually she notices that something isn't really normal with her host family, especially with Celeste. Celeste cannot live without Flat Finn, the cardboard representation of his brother. So he asks Finn, who then tells her a glimpse of what happened, which apparently isn't enough to help Celeste and to satisfy her curiosity.

Eventually Julie and Finn admit their feelings for each other. Matt, on the other hand, stays the same old sweet, nerdy Matt. :"> When things are getting better, Julie discovered the worst. Even her life was broken when that she learned what happened. The question is, how will things fall back into place now that they're broken?

Discover the truth. Hope. Laugh. LOVE.

Enjoy reading! God bless you! :)

Book Review: Sea of Tranquility (5/5)

Disclaimer:

If you're one of those who read my reviews, please be advised that the following isn't like any ordinary review I make. This time I give a part of my heart, but looks like I don't. Believe me. You might be seeing a cheese cupcake, but I'm actually giving you a 3-layer chocolate filled cake with cherries, crushed almonds, and chocolate curls on top.
(I don't actually eat chocolates, but give one to Mrs. Leighton and you win her heart.)

What can I say?

If I tell you my first experience with the book, it might just scare you off and get away from my blog as far as you could. You could miss three fourths of your life, but I'll say it anyway. The first night I read The Sea of Tranquility was during a Christmas Party. Yup. C.H.R.I.S.T.M.A.S.P.A.R.T.Y. I'm pretty sure it still spells that way. I was around page 40 and I still didn't know what to get from it. Everything's a blur, but I continued anyway. Yes, I continued reading this I'm-in-page-40-and-I-don't-understand-anything-yet-book during a Christmas Party. You might be wondering what's gotten into me, but all I was thinking about was what's with the book that made me turn pages after pages. The 2nd day I read it was during our Christmas shopping. Yes, Christmas shopping. While my best friend was rummaging fashion stores after fashion stores, I was at the corner frustratingly trying to read the teeny weeny words from the failed version of an e-pub reader on my cellphone. Then again I was around page 100-something and I was as confused but intrigued as ever. The third day was a self-inflicted insomnia that I actually have, but worked better last night than any other day. I was supposed to sleep after a day's worth of walking 5 miles inside a mall. That's what normal people do, right? Well I'm not one of them. I cleaned myself, went to bed, opened my laptop and READ. Yep, I'm pretty sure  that's what I did from ten in the evening to seven in the MORNING. I just read. Then I fell asleep, woke up, did what I had to do, and READ. Again. 'Til it was finished.

Yes, my experiences with this book deserve to be on the FIRST--hopefully not the only--PARAGRAPH you'll read.
I love this book and NO ONE CAN MAKE ME SAY OTHERWISE.
It is "distractingly pretty", if you know what I mean.
Every page is a glimpse of some part of a musical piece, whispering it's way to my ears and challenges me to stay put until all pieces are put together into a beautiful melody that I'll never forget. Unfortunately, whatever glimpse of that melody the author slips right into my ear is something I'd rather not listen to. That little melody is too painful. NO. Painful doesn't do it justice. Every single note is drenched in pain. Yes, they're heartbreaking. I can't seem to open my ears to listen to the pain, but my ears are open anyway.

My ears are open because I recognize the pain. I've reached rock bottom just as Nastya and Josh did. I'm not giving a hint about what happened, but they've reached the deepest part of rock bottom, if there's even one. Every page is painful--no--it's full of pain. One because whatever's happening there is true. There always comes a time in our lives when we reach rock bottom and bam--we're never the same again. Either we changed for the best or for the worst. Second because--somewhere in my past, your present, or probably somebody's future--we have our own version of Nastya's vow of silence and Josh's 10 years of building to escape the pain. We just simply tune out the world and tune in to our newly created world...of pity, self-loathing, and regrets.

Nastya and Josh did just that. Only it turns out far worse than they could imagine. The ending wasn't grand. The book isn't grand at all! There's no insta-love. No sparks. No swooning. There's just reality. It's so painful because I know it is real. The ending could have been one of the simplest, yet powerful last pages I've read this year. I hate it for it. It's simple, but it's true--it's real. There are no over-rated dramas or slow motion or sparkle in real-life pain. There's just an awful lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth, but afterwards there's just acceptance, forgiveness, surrender...and The Sea of Tranquility...

I think I know just where my Sea of Tranquility is...I think I know where yours is, too. And yes, I know that you know it. There's just one barrier in-between: DENIAL. Both of the characters subtly acknowledge this. I pray that someday you will, too.

Enjoy reading! God bless you.

P.S.
After sometime, I just got tired of the world I created. There's too much pain, anger, regrets, pity, guilt. I'm the complete carbon copy of Nastya. I, too, lost something I love doing and it damaged a big part of me. But just like Nastya, I did find my Josh--my salvation. Don't worry. He's not just mine. I'd be more than happy to share Him with you. Just like Josh His name means salvation. He is JESUS. In Him I am complete, filled, and loved. He is my Sea of Tranquility. He is yours, too. You know, no matter how many times we deny Him, we'll always have a place in His heart. You will always have a special place in His heart. I pray that someday there's no more denial...only acceptance, forgiveness, surrender...and The Sea of Tranquility.

What can I say?

Another plaque of appreciation for Sophie Kinsella! :"> I grew up reading her books and she never fails in making me laugh! :))

Expect a lot of twists and surprises from I've Got Your Number because there's a lot! :))

Poppy was getting married in 10 days' time when she lost her engagement ring...in a dining hall. BTW, it wasn't just a family dining area; it was a hotel dining hall! How could anyone lose an engagement ring in a crowded room? And oh, have I told you that it was a family heirloom? Great job, Poppy. :) Just great. :)

If you're thinking it ended there, think twice. His fiance's parents were coming for a visit and of course, they would want to see the ring on Poppy's hands! Uh-oh. She then hastily made a phone call, but--fortunately or unfortunately--someone snatched her phone! Errr. I'm so sorry Poppy. :)) Heehee :'> Anyway, she found a phone in a trash bin. I couldn't believe she found a phone in a trash bin!!! O.O (Guys, if you don't like your phones, just give it to me. Okayy? :) Haha!) It turned out that it was a company phone and the owner was the secretary of Sam. In order to keep the phone, she had to act as Sam's temporary secretary and to forward all e-mails to him.

Little did they know that sharing a phone would take them into a deeper connection! Eventually, they didn't just talk about business and work, but their lives as well. Sam was a complete workaholic and business-oriented man, but he had a sweet and caring side that I absolutely loved. Poppy, on the other hand, was...haha...funny! :'))

“We’re playing Scrabble. It’s a nightmare." “Scrabble?” He sounds surprised. “Scrabble’s great.”  “Not when you’re playing with a family of geniuses, it’s not. They all put words like iridiums. And I put pig.” Sam bursts into laughter.
Hahaha! Oh well. Better read the whole book and see what I'm talking about. XD If you're sad and broken hearted, please please grab a copy of this! XD Haha! Then tell me if it didn't make you laugh. :)))) Hahaha! =)) I highly recommend this book to all ages! :">

Enjoy reading! :) God bless us all! :)

What can I say?

What I Didn't Say is a heart-warming and very inspiring story.

It's written in the POV of Jake Hayes, a graduating high school student who lost his ability to speak after a car accident. Jake lives with his parents and six siblings in the very peaceful island of Orcas. It's a small island where everyone lives together as one big family. There, nobody is stranger.

Jake is a football player who flies airplanes. Cool, isn't he? He plans to join the air force shortly after graduation. However, this cool football player pilot loses his senses every time he's with Samantha, the love of his life. Four years had passed, yet he still hasn't confessed his love for her. One night, Jake willfully disobeys his mother and get drunk with his friends. With all the adrenaline, Jake gets the courage to confess his love for Sam. Without second thoughts, Jake and his friends rush to Sam's house. They aren't any near when they almost ran into a deer. The truck swerves off the road until it crashes into a T-post that breaks right into Jake's neck.

The accident leaves him mute and broken. He can no longer speak, fly planes, and worst of all, he can no longer "say" how much he loves Samantha. Jake is emotionally devastated until Sam came and helps him get back to his feet. Sam's life makes him realize that happiness isn't about how much he has or what he has, but it's all about perspective. He may have lost his voice, but he didn't lose the people who loves him--his family, Samantha, and the rest of the island.

Sam, on the other hand, also faces the hurdles of her life, but she faces it with full courage and determination to overcome.

I may have given it a rating of 3, but it's definitely worth the read. I guess it's my fault since I expected too much, but I believe this book will capture your heart. Taylor manages to expose different grave situations in life and yet skillfully reveals to us that despite hardships and difficulties, life is still beautiful.

Enjoy reading! :) God bless you! :)

What can I say?

I'm seriously left behind in class! Just like Jacqueline, I missed class for two weeks! Not because of a heartbreak, though. Heehee. Anyway, I was admitted in a hospital because of Dengue Fever stage II and I just went to class a while ago. When I asked my professors for a remedial class, I was hoping to get a tutor as cool as Landon. Unfortunately, my professors have yet to read "Easy" since they told me to catch up the lessons by myself! Ugh! Talk about unfair. How come I don't get a one-on-one e-mail tutorial session??? How come there's no Landon Maxwell to save me from my two-week ignorance of Political Thought, Southeast Asian Studies, Ethics, Japanese Studies, Medieval Literature, and Majors! See what I mean? Landon Maxwell could be really helpful right now.

Really, guys. Easy by Tammara Webber is that good. I just have to remind you, though, that it contains mature subjects and themes

I was surprised by how heavy the plot is. I don't actually support some of Jacqueline and Lucas' decisions, but I'll leave it up to you to decide. Meanwhile, I'll share three lessons I got from the book.
Here it goes!

1. Don't let your past take away your future. It doesn't define who you are today and who you'll be in the future. Live life like there's no second chance!

I got this from both Jacqueline and Lucas. Jacqueline throws away her dream of entering a prestigious music school to follow her boyfriend in a State University, only to find out that he'll break up with her just before their 3rd year anniversary. Jacqueline is devastated and she'll rather fail the class than to sit beside her ex for an hour-long Economics class! Thankfully, her bestfriend/roommate and Econ professor help her to get back to her feet. Her bestfriend starts to encourage her to come to class and her professor gives her a cool and intelligent personal tutor, Landon Maxwell.

The past of Lucas is rather heart-wrenching and tragic to the point that he almost stopped living by wasting himself. His father, a Ph.D. holder and a well-known scholar, shut down his senses and rationality because their horrid past is too much to bear. Thanks to Dr. Heller, Lucas is spared from a dead-life.

2. Do not fear. Step up. Let your voice be heard.

Two weeks after their breakup, Jacqueline is almost raped by a brotherhood rival of his ex. Good thing, Lucas is there to stop him. Knowing the shame that she'll get, Jacqueline decides to keep the incident a secret until it happens again. She escapes the second time around, but not her bestfriend's sorority friend. That's the only time they relayed the rape cases to the authority; however, they'll have to face the consequences of their prolonged silence.

3. Follow your dreams.

That includes your heart's desire. Jacqueline will eventually decide if she'll pursue a degree in music or education. And she'll also have to face her heart. Whom does she love the most? Her ex? Landon Maxwell? or Lucas?

I know you'l enjoy this book, too! Enjoy reading! God bless you more. :)

What can I say?

I was actually surprised. I never thought I'd like Lola and the Boy Next Door. Honestly, I was purposely ignoring this book because I was discouraged by its negative reviews. I mean, who wouldn't be discouraged by the hundreds of raves? Yeah, so what I did was I pushed this book to the end of my reading list as much as I could. Mean, huh? But then I really loooove Stephanie Perkins! She made me fall head over heels for Anna and the French Kiss, so I was still secretly craving for Lola and the Boy Next Door. Apparently, I couldn't hold myself anymore and I finally buried my nose on its pages! Ha! :)

Okay, let me start. There were a lot of issues that bothered me in this book. Issues that I won't tolerate in real life. But then, I admired Stephanie Perkins. I admired the way she crafted these controversial issues without making it sound that she supports them OR rejects them. She just lays all of them on the table and leaves a room for us to ponder and decide.

Concealing these issues is the story of Lola. She's a creative 17 year old girl who loves to dress up everyday. She vows to never repeat the same garment in a year! Unbelievable. So, she has this huge crush on his gorgeous neighbor, Cricket. They've been the best of friends until Cricket's 16th birthday. Cricket's family moved into a new place in order to make way for Calliope's, Cricket's twin, training. Cricket and Lola didn't part ways really well. So after Cricket's family moved, Lola was left heartbroken and rejected.

Cricket's family is gone for two years and Lola tries her very best to forget him and move on. She did, well she thought she did. She got a new boyfriend, a band vocalist, who is way way way older than her. This made her parents anxious about her boyfriend. They never allowed Lola to go out with him without a series of interrogation and check-up calls.

When everything seems good for Lola, that's when Cricket's family returned. They've changed a lot, especially Cricket. He's still unbelievably good looking and gorgeous, but he seems different. He acts differently. He's A LOT nicer and A LOT sweeter to Lola! That's because he's undeniably, deeply, and truly in love with Lola since time immemorial! Sweeeeet. <3

But when Cricket admits this to Lola, her happy life becomes a lot more complicated. She becomes crowded with confused feelings, mixed emotions, and abrupt decisions. How would Lola manage this situation? What would happen to Cricket knowing that Lola has a boyfriend? How would Lola handle the issues pressuring her?

See for yourselves and try to read it. Don't be discouraged by the tons of rages against this book. It's pretty cool. :) I think you'll like it. :) Cricket is awesome <3 HA HA! =)) PLUS Anna and Etienne are here in the book! <3 <3 <3 Though I was a bit disappointed because I can't recognize their voices. They didn't sound like themselves from the first book, but then I guess I'm just thinking too much. :P Overall, the book's fun to read.

Enjoy reading! God bless!

Book Review: The Sky is Everywhere

Format: Ebook
Pages: 354
Type: Stand-alone

What can I say?

I started The Sky is Everywhere yesterday after lunch, but I couldn't put it down. I kept reading and finally finished it at two in the morning. There I found myself awestricken by the characters (especially Joe!), the poems, the music, and Oh, the magnificent writing of Jandy Nelson. Her words danced in my ears as if they were notes perfectly partnered together. It was astounding!

The book begins with Lennie's (a.k.a. John Lennon) dying doppelgänger plant. Gram, her grandmother, belives that the health of the Lennie plant is adjacent with Lennie's overall condition. It is probably true since Lennie isn't emotionally stable at the moment. Her only and beloved sister, Bailey, just died recently because of arrhythmia. None of them expected Bailey's death. Besides, she is just 19 years old and looks perfectly healthy on stage.

Lennie finds it difficult to accept her sister's death. Soon she becomes aloof with Gram, Uncle Big, her bestfriend Sarah, and even Joe, the new musical aficionado in town who visits her daily at home. Lennie thinks that no one understands her except Toby, Bailey's boyfriend. Toby goes to Lenny at night and they'll grieve for Bailey's death together. They'll try to find comfort in each other; however, their relationship grow a little more complicated. They find the wrong channel to express their grief.

Joe, on the other hand, is a musical genius. He plays almost all the instruments really well. Though he's new in school, he's more than qualified to temporarily replaced Lennie as the second chair clarinettist while she is on leave. He isn't just a musical genius, he's a heartthrob as well. He is hot squared, gorgeous squared, sweet squared, and the list goes on. And Oh, who wouldn't fall for his long eyelashes? Bat. Bat. Bat. Oh boy, he's "unfreakingfreakingfreakingbelievable!"

More than that, he is highly, deeply, completely, intensely, and passionately in love with Lennie! During summer vacation, Joe visits Lennie's home daily. He helps Gram; He brings dead bugs for Uncle Big (he loves dead bugs); And he patiently waits for Lennie until she finally wants to play music with him. I also love the way Joe respects Lennie as a lady. Joe wants to help Lennie move on from her heartbreak caused by Bailey's death:

"I’ve never met anyone as heartbroken as JL, I want to make her feel better, want to be around her all the time..."

But then, how will Lennie handle her situation? Joe is in love with her. She is in love with Joe. But TOBY...How about Toby and Lennie? And Bailey?

Nelson handled this love triangle really well. I am also surprised by how the difficult issues (death, forgiveness, etc.) were treated wisely and truthfully in the story.

It's about death, life, love, family, acceptance, forgiveness, moving on...

As you read this book, I pray that your hearts will also be healed from the hurts, the pain, and the burdens you've been carrying. Enjoy reading! God bless!
"There once was a girl who found herself dead. She spent her days peering   over the ledge of heaven, her chin in her palm. She was bored as a brick, hadn't adjusted yet   to the slower pace of heavenly life. Her sister would look up at her and wave, and the dead girl would wave back but she was too far away for her sister to see. The dead girl thought her sister might be writing her notes, but it was too long a trip to make   for a few scattered notes here and there so she let them be. And then, one day, her earthbound sister finally realized she could hear music up there in heaven, so after that, everything her sister needed to tell her she did through her clarinet and each time she played, the dead girl jumped up (no matter what else she was doing), and danced. "

What can I say?

The moment I finished reading Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard I immediately Googled the places Bria and Rowen have been to. It's not the best of the best places in the world, but they're worth anyone's time, money, and presence. Kirsten knitted the story well enough that I felt like I was there myself! The story's unbelievably awesome! When I found out that MOST of the locations in Wanderlove exist, I checked Google once again for the travel expenses, hotels, etc. Who knows, a thrilling adventure might just be around the corner!

Bria, an 18 year old Californian young lady who used to love drawing, went with Global Vagabonds to explore Central America. She met her tour group, who were apparently not in her age group, when she arrived at the Guatemala Airport. Their group was supposed to follow their itinerary for three weeks, but her boring tour members made her vacation nothing less than a disappointment.

Fortunately, Rowan--the long haired backpacker hunk--came across her path in the Chichicastenango Mayan market. When someone stole Bria's camera, Rowan was just around the corner so he heard Bria's scream. He came over and appeased her frustration by inviting her for dinner at a guest house across Lake Atitlan

The "Most Beautiful Lake in the World:" Lake Atitlan
That was the start of the adventure Bria never thought she would experience. She got rid of her tour group and went with Rowan and her half-sister, Starling. Rowan and Starling were backpackers. Unlike Bria, Rowan and Starling have already traveled across a number of places. This time, they were heading to Laughingbird Caye, the place where Rowan works as an assistant diving instructor and the place that witnessed Rowan's horrid past.

Along the way, Bria saw glimpses of who Rowan was--or at least, is. However, Rowan would not say a single word about his past. All Bria knew was that:

a) Rowan had a past that he is trying to forget;
b) he made a serious mess out of his life;
c) Bria's not his type; and that
d) Starling begged her to take care of Rowan because they were heading to a place from his past.

Rowan
Illustrated by Kirsten Hubbard

Sure Rowan had a past that he is trying to get over with, but so is Bria. Bria used all her savings to go on a trip far from home, far from her parents, far from her ex-boyfriend, far from the arts, and far from everything that caused her hurts and pains. She wanted to escape all the pain before moving on to college.

Would escaping their past heal their wounds? Would ignoring the past make the future any easier? Will Rowan and Bria accept each other despite their dreadful past? What's the best way to move on?

Wanderlove has all the answers to these questions. The book is full of insights that would make you reflect over your past and help you look forward to your future. It offers help on how one can deal with a painful past and how he can freely take a step forward towards tomorrow. The book also opens your senses to the paradise you have yet to see here on earth! It brings you to the adventure that will surely make an impact in your life! It's inspiring. It's funny. It's exciting!

Wanderlove is tops! It's the perfect book for summer! Enjoy reading! :">
